So, remember that in Part 1 of this repair log, I replaced a 74LS163 Binary Counter that was broken. Well, I figured that if that one is broken, there is a possibility that there are some other broken ones too. I inspected the PCB and I found another 4 74LS163′s in the top right corner at locations A17, A18, B17 and B18 (next to the 2 rams). Their functionality however appeared to be different from the one I previously replaced. Since their inputs are connected and their outputs go straight to the rams next to them, I think their functionality is to cycle through the rams starting from a given address that can be supplied by another component.

When I tested these four components, I found out that the one on location A17 was faulty. This one drives the four most significant bits of the address lines of the ram at A19.

I replaced it, put in a new one from my stock and plugged the PCB into my arcade cabinet again. And this was the result:

Well, I can hear you think: “That’s not much better. That actually looks worse!”

Actually, that isn’t true. This arcade game (like many others) probably works by rendering odd and even frames in separate portions of the hardware. These frames are then alternated quickly. That’s probably why you can see that one frame is actually quite good, while the other is positioned wrong.

If you keep that in mind and compare the new situation (on the right) with the state it was after the last repair (on the left):

Then you can clearly see that the image has now shifted a bit more to the correct side (to the right).

So this made me realize that there still might be a problem left in that circuit on the top right corner of the board (containing the four counters and two RAMs). I checked those components, I double checked them and I triple checked them. I backtracked the signals until I reached the connector of the PCB. I forward tracked them until I started running in circles. I couldn’t find any other error.

I had checked all other RAMs before and I could remember that there was one on the board that was acting a bit strange, but I left that problem to be solved later. Now it was the time to get back to that.

On the graphics PCB, there is a section of four 2114 RAMs in the lower center of the board in positions H8, H9, J8 and J9. When I checked these, all address lines seemed to fine. However, when I checked the I/O lines, the RAM in position J9 was acting quite weird.

You can see there’s some traffic, but it’s really faint. And the clear line that is “stable” around 1.5V is not a good sign either…

The problem with RAMs however is that they can be quite hard to debug since the I/O pins are (hence the name) used for inputting and outputting data. This means that if the RAM is faulty and not outputting anything, there will still be traffic on the I/O pins. So this weird measurements could sure mean that the RAM is broken, but it could also mean that a component that provides input to this RAM is doing some weird stuff.

When I traced the I/O pins backwards, I easily reached a 74LS245 (Octal 3-STATE Bus Transceiver) next to it.

This component can be used to isolate two busses (one on the A-pins and one on the B-pins). (If you don’t know what a bus is, you can read more about it here)

The I/O pins of the RAM were connected to 5A, 6A, 7A and 8A. The pins B1 through B8 were connected directly to the data bus of the system.

Since pins 1A through 4A were connected to another RAM and they were working perfectly and a second 74LS245 (also directly connected to the data bus) was working perfectly, it would be very strange if only the lower half of this component had stopped working.

So I concluded the RAM was indeed fried. I replaced the broken 2114 with a 2148 I still had laying around. I know it’s a bit overkill (2148′s are compatible with 2114′s but they are much faster and thus more expensive), but it would be actually more costly for me to order some 2114′s than to use an 2148 I still have. If I ever do order 2114′s I’ll replace the 2148 again, since I socket all chips I replace.

When I put the game back in my arcade cabinet, this was the result:

As you can see, the result is astonishing! The game looks almost perfect. There are only some problems left with the sprites showing up pink. I’ll try to fix that next. Stay tuned for what hopefully should be the last part of this repair log!

As a reference, here is a picture of the (lower) graphics PCB again on which I was working in the original condition (in which I bought it):

As you can see on the picture, the four lower roms have had a hard time. You can even see that some pins are green or brown from oxidation.

Well, I did clean the board a lot, but it’s really hard to clean the pins inside the sockets very well. So my plan was to replace the sockets of those four roms. The only thing I needed was a confirmation that this could actually give some benefit, so I fired up my oscilloscope again.

After checking a couple of pins on those roms, I got my confirmation. This is an address line as it’s arriving in good condition on one of the pins on the socket:

And this is what actually arrives on the rom:

It’s easy to understand that a rom can’t do anything with a signal that is this heavily distorted. So I took out the roms of their sockets and I started to remove the first socket.

This was easier said than done. The problem was that the sockets were so close to the PCB that it’s almost impossible to cut under them without damaging any traces on the PCB. I found this out the hard way: I damaged a trace and had to repair it with a wire on the back side of the PCB.

So I switched techniques. I started to destroy all plastic of the socket first by attacking it with sharp pliers (for electronics). When only the metal pins were left, I sucked up as much as solder from the back side of the PCB with a desoldering pump. Then I carefully removed every pin (without pulling it!) while applying heat of my soldering iron to the pin as close to the PCB as possible. Lastly I cleaned all the holes again with my soldering iron and desoldering pump. Soldering on the new sockets went quick and easy.

I have to warn you: when using this technique be very careful while cutting the socket. Only cut when you’re sure that you wont hit the PCB. Don’t put your pliers or any other tool between the socket and the PCB. And never try to pull any pins out of their holes. They should easily fall or it should be easy to take take them out (while applying heat).

And then I put the PCB back in my arcade cabinet. I expected to see some improvement, but not that much. When I turned on my cabinet, I was completely amazed.

Yes, the screen is still scrambled, but this is a huge improvement since the last time! You can actually see the game now. And I already have a couple of things in my mind I will check during the next fix.

This repair is definitely going the right way. Stay tuned for the next part!

When I bought the board, it was almost completely dead. As you can see in this picture, someone probably spilled something over it (my guess would be soda).

These boards were marked GX330 by Konami. My guess would be that the upper board handles the main program and the audio while the second board handles graphics.

When I tried to boot this board I got a still image showing only some characters and a lot of distortion in the image.

Since it was so dirty, it would be almost impossible if the socketed chips would still make good contact. So I removed all of them from their sockets and cleaned them thoroughly. Some of them had so badly corroded pins that they almost immediately broke off when I removed them from their sockets.

After testing the board this time, I still got nothing more than the still image, but at least the distortion went away. I was already making progress.

I realized that I couldn’t continue repairing this board if I didn’t thoroughly cleaned it. So I removed all socketed chips and the ribbon connectors from both boards and cleaned them with water and soap in the sink.

As you can see, both boards were shining as never before!

I let them dry for a couple of days (probably more than long enough, but I wanted to be sure) and when I tested them again, the game actually booted! The game was running and sound was working too, but the graphics were really scrambled.

Yes the graphics are scrambled, yes the colors are weird, yes the orange bar at the left is strange, but this was a huge step! Now it was possible for me to start debugging a working game.

So, after this step, months passed. I actually wrote a thesis, graduated, found a job and made 3 foreign trips before continuing on board.

Today I started debugging. Since, according to me, the lower PCB handles graphical stuff and the 4 (ee)proms in the lower right corner were heavily damaged, I headed straight for those. When I fired up my oscilloscope and checked them, I noticed they weren’t doing anything. There was just no activity at all arriving at their address lines. That means that some other component is faulty so the game can’t even attempt to access the roms.

So I just took a random address line of a rom and traced it back. This brought me to a component 74LS273 (Octal D-type Flip-Flip with clear) in location G13.

As you can see in the picture, this thingy contains 8 D-Flip-Flops (if you don’t know what a flip-flop is, then you can read something about it here). Essentially these things are just memory units which hold the address data before they go to the roms. When I inspected this chip, I found out it wasn’t doing anything. The reason for this was simple to find out: the clock signal that is supposed to drive this chip (flip the flip-flops) at pin 11 was stuck high. So my next move was to trace back where the clock signal was coming from.

I traced it back to the pin 6 of the 74LS32 (Quad 2-Input OR Gates) chip in position F12.

As you can see, this is a very simple chip and pin 6 (2Y) is just the output of an OR-gate with 2A and 2B as its input. And since pin 4 (2A) was tied low to ground, this OR-gate wasn’t performing any logical function. So my guess is that it was just used here as a buffer to amplify the signal or to delay the signal with the duration of one logic gate. Anyway, I had to trace back the input on pin 5 (2B), which was also stuck high.

This led me to a chip in position F18 from which all readings were faded away. On some (horribly scanned and almost unreadable) schematics I found on the internet, I managed to figure out that this was a 74LS139.

The signal I was tracing was an output on pin 5 (1Y1). I checked both corresponding inputs (1A and 1B) and they were both dead, so this wasn’t the culprit either. Both inputs on 1A and 1B brought me to a 74LS86 (Quad 2-Input Exclusive-OR Gate) in position F16. They arrived at pins 11 and 8 respectively.

So actually they were both the output of a XOR-gate. (3Y and 4Y) Since also here both 3B and 4B were tied low to ground, I only had to check 3A and 4A. Both those inputs were also dead. Well, “dead”… The weird part was that they were fixed at about 1.4V, which is not low and not high. It’s something in between. This might be an indication that there’s definitely something wrong. They led me to the chip next to it, a 74LS163 (Synchronous 4-Bit Binary Counters).

Well, this chip is pretty interesting, since it’s a counter. It basically works like this (simplified): you can store a 4-bit binary number into the chip via the inputs A, B, C and D (with A being the least significant bit) and then every time a rising pulse occurs on CLK, the chip will increment the number it has in its memory and output that on the pins Qa, Qb, Qc and Qd. It’s also important to know that the chip will overflow (and thus can keep counting). This is visualized in the following diagram (click for full view):

On my board, the traces I was following connected to Qc and Qd. All inputs (A,B,C and D) and outputs (Qa, Qb, Qc and Qd) were stuck on an unholy voltage of 1.4V. Weird.

I found out that the inputs A,B,C and D were not connected to anything at all and there was a pretty fast clock signal present on CLK. This means this chip is not used for counting, but for lowering the frequency of a clock pulse.

Since a continuous clock signal is present on CLK, this chip is continuously counting in an endless loop. This means that on Qa, the output will switch from high to low and vice versa every time a rise is detected on CLK (because Qa represents the least significant bit of the output). As a result you should get a clock signal on Qa with half the frequency of the one supplied on CLK. This can actually also be seen in the diagram I posted above.

In the same manner a signal with frequency 1/4th of the original must be present on Qb, one with frequency 1/8th on Qc and one with frequency 1/16th on Qd.

Since on this chip on my board all requirements were met for it to produce those signals and Qa, Qb, Qc and Qd were all dead, I concluded that this chip was the culprit.

I unsoldered it, soldered in a socket and replaced it with a 74LS163 (which I still had a couple laying around of), et voilà. The 74LS163 started counting happily and I measured busy activity on the address lines of the roms I started on.

When I plugged the board in my arcade cabinet, the screen was still scrambled (which I expected), but I could already notice some differences. Colors were good, the orange bar on the left had disappeared and I started to notice more textures. So we’re on the right track!

I hope that I can solve this problem entirely and I will post the next fix here too.

But I hope to revive my blog with this post, and I’m planning to use it to post updates about this project I started working on. I decided to do this post in English again, as I know that a lot of people all over the world are interested in this kind of stuff.

Since a couple of months, I’m getting more and more interested in arcade cabinets and, by extension, the entire retro gaming scene. As a result, I decided to start with a MAME project to work on in my spare time (my working title is: “Project 20″. For those of you who don’t know MAME, I’ll give a short explanation what exactly the goal is of this project.

MAME (“Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator”) is an emulator that can run a huge amount of old arcade games on a regular PC. Since playing these games on a PC is nice, but doesn’t really bring the arcade feel back, the purpose of a MAME project is to build an arcade cabinet with a PC inside or convert an existing one so it can run MAME.

I study Computer Science and because I have never done any real woodworking, it seemed a logical decision to go for the second option. So I went out hunting for a cheap cabinet. The condition it was in wasn’t really a big deal, since I was planning to convert it anyway.

So this is where the story begins: I got extremely lucky. I got this cabinet for free.

And I will tell you why I was lucky: this cabinet is in a really good condition. Coin mechanisms, the speaker, the monitor and even a glass covering plate are still in place.

According to the previous owner, the cabinet was in a playable condition before he removed the PCB, so all mentioned parts should be functional.

On this picture (and also on the other ones in this post), you can see the cabinet in the state in which I acquired it, which means: rather dirty for not being used for years. A decent cleanup will be my first move towards it.

I will now give a quick tour around the cabinet.

First of all, the side art, which is in a pretty good shape. Better than I expected. Originally, I was planning to completely repaint the cabinet and put some new artwork on it, but seeing the good condition of the current artwork, just leaving the cabinet like that would also be an option.

Nonetheless, I find the current artwork kind of ugly and my current plans are still to completely redesign the looks of the cabinet.

Also, the cabinet is a bid damaged near the bottom. Sadly this happened while transporting it to my home. I still got the pieces of wood that broke off and this should be no big problem to repair.

The next shot gives you an impression of dirtiness. It also shows the horrible layout of the control panel. The joysticks feel very cheap and the push buttons are very impractical to use. Only both start buttons feel great, but still don’t look that good.

As a result, I will probably remove the control panel entirely and redesign it from scratch.

The coin door that is mounted in the cabinet feels cheap, has 3 slots (with one blocked) and has the lock removed. But hey, I won’t complain. I have a coin door.

The cash door underneath looks and feels genuine, has a lock, but needs some touching up here and there.

The coin slots got labels of “20 Belgian Francs”, a currency that was replaced by the Euro in 2002. It does bring back the old feeling of arcade machines using this coin as a credit when I was a kid. 20 Belgian Francs is about 0,5 euros.

Time to open up the cabinet and take a look of what’s inside, starting with the coin door. There are two “Coin Comparitor”, model CC-40 mounted inside, with a comparing coin of 20 Belgian Francs still in place in either of them. This is a great discovery, since they are both rather expensive components.

Haven’t been able to test them yet, but they look in working order to me. The left one on the picture (with yellow label) has a broken coin reject switch, but that might be an easy fix. It also had a candy bar wrapping in the coin reject box.

When I took a look inside the cabinet, I noticed that the hole in the wood where the coins fall through, in the cash box, have been enlarged manually (not visible on the next picture).  This was a first indication that some modifications have been made to the cabinet, altering it from its original state.

The cash box is still there and has a nice little drawer that looks and feels genuine.

Now it’s time to open the back door and take a closer look at what’s still inside. On the inner side of the back door is a manual taped for the game Three Wonders and an explanation of the JAMMA standard. My guess is that this game was originally installed in this cabinet.

Taking a look inside the cabinet, you can see that, although the PCB has been removed, the monitor, the power supply and all wiring are still there. The monitor, speaker and marquee light are still connected to the power supply.

Everything looks quite genuine, but I did notice something strange. Although the “Three Wonders” manual mentioned a JAMMA standard and the cabinet has a lot of typical JAMMA properties (2 joysticks, 3 buttons per player, 2 coin slots and mono sound), a regular 56-pin JAMMA connector is nowhere to be seen.

Wiring coming from both player controls, the coin mechanisms, the monitor and the speaker, they are all provided via a separate connector. My guess is that “Three Wonders” probably wasn’t the last game that got installed in this cabinet. It must have been rewired to support some other non-JAMMA PCB. Another indication for the fact that this cabinet must have been converted at least once is the holes and unused cable wraps that can be found against the inner sides.

Taking a closer look at the monitor from the inside, I noticed it’s a 20″ beauty made by Hantarex. I’m so hoping that it isn’t broken!

I’m not familiar with arcade monitors, and as the sticker on the side with type and production date isn’t where it should be anymore, I haven’t been able to identify the model or the age of the monitor.

The control panel can open nicely. Since I’m planning to redesign it anyway, it doesn’t need any more attention. I just include this picture as a reference. Also, I found out that the right joystick has a broken microswitch.

OK, since some components are still connected to the power supply, I decided to just power it on.

First thing to notice is that the marquee lights up beautifully. After all these years, the light in the back of it still works. Although that really has to be the cheapest component, it made me smile to see it lighting up.

Also, more exiting: the monitor clearly powers up. It produces a high-pitched sound, like televisions typically do. When powering down, a decharing flash can clearly be seen on the screen. This is very promising!

After I had removed the marquee to take some measurements of it, I decided to take a picture of the cabinet, just as a reference.

On this picture, also the covering glass in front of the monitor has been removed and you can clearly see that no monitor bezel is mounted. I will have to make one myself. Also, the mono speaker is clearly visible.

Well that’s it for now. What are my plans for this cabinet? Well, to be honest: I’m not really sure about that. I’m thinking about restoring it to the JAMMA standard and add a JAMMA-to-MAME conversion, or just converting it to MAME can also be an option.

I’ll be doing some research and brainstorming about that. The next job is to clean it up nicely. Check back for updates soon!

Dag 1: Donderdag 14 augustus 2008

De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig:

Om het festival op gang te trappen kozen we voor onze Nederlandse vrienden van De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig. Leuk concert, dansbare muziek, goede humor. Alleen spijtig dat de geluidskwaliteit niet zo optimaal was. België, waar is de liefde?

DJ Mehdi:

Ons eerste bezoekje aan de Boiler was meteen een knaller. DJ Mehdi kwam voor de dag met een uitstekende muziekkeuze die technisch nagenoeg perfect in de blender gestopt werd. Goeie performance met een geweldig feestje tot gevolg. Meer moet dat niet zijn.

Uffie & Feadz:

Feadz verzorgde de anderhalf uur durende DJ-set en Uffie kwam middenin een kwartiertje of drie eventjes vuilbekkend MC’en met haar moeder op de eerste rij. Dat was zowat het stramien van het optreden van Uffie & Feadz. Leuk voor eventjes, maar na een tijdje begint al die vunzigheid eigenlijk een beetje te vervelen. Bovendien kwam Feadz technisch gezien niet altijd even sterk voor de dag.

SebastiAn:

Goeie set op alle vlak. Niets op aan te merken. Wel niet volledig gezien wegens Hot Chip. Zoals gewoonlijk wel weer veel te warm in de boiler.

Hot Chip:

Dat dit een wereldperformance ging worden hadden we niet verwacht. De Engelse band Hot Chip kwam (in tegenstelling tot op hun albums) verrassend ruig uit de hoek. En dansbaar, zo ongelooflijk dansbaar. Bovendien bewezen ze dat een slow vandaag de dag weer kan in de dance-scene met een meesterlijke cover van Nothing Compares 2 You van Sinéad O’Connor. Ruim het beste optreden van de dag. Misschien wel van het ganse festival. Respect!

Pendulum:

Twee jaar geleden al gezien op Pukkelpop en dit jaar gingen we opnieuw kijken om een geweldig feestje te bouwen. En ja hoor, het was opnieuw al springen en zweten wat de klok sloeg. Wel een verschil is dat het vorige keer een DJ-set betrof terwijl de Australische heren ditmaal live speelden. Het gevolg is dat hun grote hits op een meer artistieke (en ook wel betere) manier gebracht werden, maar daardoor ietsje minder herkenbaar (en dus ook wat minder dansbaar) waren voor het publiek. Desalniettemin een geweldig concert.

The Ting Tings:

Even helemaal naar de andere kant van de wei gewandeld voor het optreden van The Ting Tings bij te wonen. Slecht geprogrammeerd in de Club die veel te klein bleek voor deze groep. Slaagden er niet echt in om het publiek op sleeptouw te nemen (op de gebruikelijke veertienjarigen na waarschijnlijk). Toch ken ik nog een sterretje toe als beloning voor de prachtig uitgevoerde versie van That’s Not My Name. Spijtig genoeg liep de tent na dit nummer half leeg.

Dag 2: Vrijdag 15 augustus 2008

Dusty Kid:

Om de dag te beginnen eventjes gaan kijken naar Dusty Kid, die wij enkel kenden van The Cat. De Italiaan imponeerde met een goede set van technisch straffe kwaliteit. Er zit toekomst in deze man! Wel spijtig dat er nogal weinig volk naar hem kwam kijken. De Dance Hall was op dit vroege uur blijkbaar nog iets te groot. Voorlopig dus ook nog geen filmpje te vinden op YouTube.

Girls In Hawaii:

Sterk optreden van onze Waalse vrienden. Goede muziek, begeleid met een mooie en artistieke visuele show. Het zou leuk zijn mochten deze mannen een grote hit scoren, want ik denk wel zeker dat ze in staat zijn een leuk feestje te bouwen. Dat zat er deze keer niet echt in.

Brodinski:

Leuke set, goede technische kwaliteit. We hebben ze wel niet volledig meegemaakt omdat we naar Deadmau5 zijn gaan kijken.

Deadmau5:

“Het zou geweldig zijn, mocht ie verkleed als muis het podium opkomen”, zei één van mijn festivalmakkers. Profetische woorden, blijkbaar. Deadmau5 trakteerde ons op een goede, zware, rauwe én dansbare techno-set. Techno zoals het vroeger was. Iets wat ik wel kan smaken.

Does It Offend You, Yeah?: 0

We vonden het raar dat deze electro-groep niet in de Dance Hall geprogrammeerd stond. Opnieuw naar de Club dan maar voor Does It Offend You, Yeah? . Toen we stonden te wachten in de tent voordat het optreden begon, en we zagen dat we grotendeels omringd waren door pubers en hippies, voelden we de bui al hangen. Bij deze willen we dan ook een boodschap doorgeven aan n00bs inzake de elektronische muziek: moshen op electro is volledig not done. Maar niet enkel het publiek stelde zich hier nogal marginaal op. De band bracht een prachtig voorbeeld van hoe het eigenlijk niet moet en slaagde er perfect in om ieder nummer te spelen als een lelijke kitcherige brij. Waarschijnlijk dachten deze muzikanten dat ieder nummer beëindigen door een halve minuut zo hard mogelijk op alle instrumenten rammen, een pluspunt is. Niet dus. Niets is zo irritant als moeten luisteren naar ongecontroleerde chaos. En die arrogantie… Echt zielig.

Robyn:

Dan maar weer terug naar onze vertrouwde habitat, de Dance Hall, voor een optreden van Robyn. En wat voor één, het contrast kon niet groter zijn. Ze slaagde er in op een geweldige manier oude nummers met nieuwe en enkele covers af te wisselen. Dansmuziek zoals God het bedoeld heeft. Goed voor meerdere kippenvelmomenten, met With Every Heartbeat als ultieme hoogtepunt. Robyn heeft een fantastische stem, kan bij momenten geweldig aggresief uit de hoek komen, maar blijft altijd even stijlvol. Daar kan Uffie nog wat van leren. Een wereldartieste, ongetwijfeld.

Erol Alkan:

De tweede keer dat ik Erol Alkan zie en een beetje last van het “meer van hetzelfde”-gevoel. Technisch gezien zit alles waarschijnlijk wel goed snor, maar wel last van een rare muziekkeuze die nooit echt goed is om een echt feestje op te bouwen. Dan ook maar niet volledig uitgekeken en vertrokken naar de Dance Hall.

Miss Kittin & The Hacker:

De tweede keer van de dag dat we op een rauwe en zware technoset getrakteerd werden. En, naar analogie met Robyn, moet dit dan wel techno zijn zoals God het bedoeld heeft. Volledig in de stijl van Kraftwerk en met een ongelooflijke présence. The Hacker leek wel net uit Reservoir Dogs weggestapt en het moet gezegd: Miss Kitten heeft een geweldige stem. Maar wat misschien nog het meest opviel aan dit optreden was de degelijkheid en perfectie waarmee alles ten tonele werd gebracht.

Boys Noize:

Hoge verwachtingen hadden we voor deze DJ-set en we stonden dan ook redelijk vooraan. De set zelf stak degelijk in mekaar en neigde eigenlijk sterk naar een liveset. Boys Noize moet zowat de helft van de tijd gevuld hebben met eigen werk, voornamelijk uit zijn album Oi Oi Oi. En dat het publiek werkelijk van de eerste tot de laatste seconde op deze muziek compleet uit de bol ging moet nog maar eens bewijzen dat deze Duitser een wereldalbum heeft afgeleverd, niet meer, niet minder. Absoluut hoogtepunt: het moment waarop hij in het massa sprong, op een degelijke croudsurf getrakteerd werd en daarbij een schoen verloor. Vanwege het ongelooflijk hoge feestgehalte willen we Boys Noize met plezier de enkele technische foutjes vergeven.

Dag 3: Zaterdag 16 augustus 2008

The Whip:

Brachten een geslaagd optreden met goede nummers. Konden zelfs al rekenen op enkele bekendere hitjes om het publiek op dit uur reeds aan het dansen te krijgen. De muziek stond wel een beetje té luid, volgens ons.

The Bloody Beetroots:

Weten zeer goed hoe ze een feestje moeten bouwen en brachten een set die vooral primeerde in de muziekkeuze. Hun gehele set mooi gemixt tot een verfijnd hoopje trash in de stijl van Mish Mash. Eigenlijk deed dit optreden me zeer hard denken aan hoe Boys Noize twee jaar geleden klonk op Pukkelpop. Sfeervol, vuil, gedurfd en technisch zeker in orde. Hier zit toekomst in.

Crookers:

Degelijke en goed verzorgde DJ-set, misschien niet zo spectaculair als The Bloody Beetroots, maar werkte wel naar dé climax van het weekend in de boiler toe: Knobbers (zie video). Onvergetelijk hoogtepunt. Nog een kleine opmerking: die remix van Thunderstruck blijft heerschen.

Yelle:

Halverwege het optreden slaagde Yelle er pas in het publiek met zich mee te krijgen. Maar dat was wel ruimschoots voordat A Cause Des Garçons (waar toch iedereen op stond te wachten) gespeeld werd. Al bij al dus nog een zeer geslaagd optreden (dat mens kan zingen zeg!). Wel een minpuntje: een verkeerd geïmproviseerd tecktonik-danspasje was fataal voor mijn rug.

A-Trak:

Niet volledig gezien, maar het gedeelte dat ik wel gezien heb kon me niet echt bekoren. Rare muziekkeuze en de mixen waren wel trashy maar niet altijd even foutloos. Bovendien paste dat stukje R&B echt niet in de boiler. Toch nog redelijk geamuseerd.

Tocadisco:

Dat deze set goed in mekaar stak en vrij was van fouten, wil ik best geloven. De muziekkeuze was nogal standaard maar het grootste probleem was dat, nadat het ganse publiek twee uur aan een stuk om Streetgirls vroeg door het deuntje te schreeuwen, Mijnheer Draaitafel uiteindelijk besloot dit niet te spelen. Onbegrijpelijk en onvergefelijk.

Simian Mobile Disco:

Zware en imponerende performance die bol stond van het lawaai en de stoboscopen. Bekende nummers werden telkens aan mekaar geplakt door een wervelende draaikolk van geluid en licht. Indrukwekkend om te zien. Helaas stopte de show nogal plots en bleef ik met een onafgewerkt gevoel zitten. Was mooi om te zien, dat wel.

Dr. Lektroluv:

Onze groene dokter nam dit jaar op Pukkelpop zijn DJ-set op om die later op het jaar te releasen als zijn nieuwe album. Dat betekent dat we van op voorhand hadden kunnen voorspellen hoe zijn optreden er uit ging zien: een spetterende muziekkeuze, met allemaal bekende nummers, maar zeer braafjes en met weinig risico in mekaar gemixt. Alsof je een cd-tje op hebt liggen natuurlijk. En meteen werden onze verwachtingen ingelost. Deze set stak perfect in mekaar, maar het live-sausje ontbrak een beetje. Daarom dat we het optreden ook niet volledig hebben bijgewoond. Ik kan even goed binnen enkele maanden het album, dat ongetwijfeld zeer goed zal zijn, eens beluisteren.

Etienne De Crecy:

“Gaan we nog eventjes naar Etienne De Crécy kijken?”, vroeg ik een minuut of vijf voordat dit optreden begon. En ik ben blij dat we dat gedaan hebben. Toen we de Dance Hall binnen kwamen zagen we een gigantische, vierkante stelling opgesteld staan met Etienne in het middenste vakje. Toen de show begon en de ribben van de stelling op het ritme begonnen op te lichten, wist ik al hoe laat het was: hier kwam een lichtshow aan met een allure als die van Daft Punk. En jawel hoor. De eerste drie nummers werd er zelfs niet gedanst omdat het publiek druk bezig was met naar het podium te gapen. Dit moet gezegd worden: ruimschoots de beste lichtshow van het weekend en als je kijkt met hoe weinig middelen deze gemaakt is, durf ik zelfs beweren dat ze mooier was dat die van Daft Punk twee jaar geleden.
En de muziek? Ook die was overheerlijk. Electro as it should be. Het beste optreden van Pukkelpop 2008. Goed voor het volle uur kippenvel (letterlijk!). Wat een afsluiter. Het driehoekje staat symbool voor Daft Punk. Willen we afspreken dat vanaf nu het vierkantje symbool staat voor Etienne De Crécy?

Round-up

Dit was mijn derde Pukkelpop en zeker en vast de gezelligste. Op voorhand leek de affiche wat minder dan andere jaren, maar ik moet toch toegeven dat ik veel goede optredens gezien heb.

Een belangrijke vaststelling: ik heb dit jaar geen enkel optreden bekeken op de Main Stage. Mijn muzieksmaak begint dus duidelijk te polariseren. Mijn favoriete podium was, is en zal nog geruime tijd de Dance Hall blijven.

Nadeel was wel dat 25 optredens bijwonen op 3 dagen tijd en bovendien nog bijna iedere avond wat doorfeesten fysiek enorm doorweegt. Het is nu bijna een week geleden en ik ben nog altijd niet helemaal bekomen. En geen tecktonik meer voor mij!

Om twee redenen:

1. Dit is volgens mij dé schijf van het jaar.
2. Aangezien ik naar Pukkelpop vertrek, heeft de titel nog enige grond van waarheid.

Want het nummer dat er in gespeeld wordt, is misschien wel het beste dat ik de afgelopen jaren gehoord heb.

Coldplay – Viva La Vida

Dat het een geweldadige clip is, is wel het minst wat je kan zeggen, maar dat wil toch niet meteen zeggen dat hij ook slecht is?

Integendeel, ik vind dat de clip fantastisch in mekaar steekt en perfect bij het nummer past. Hij mag dan wel shockeren, maar volgens mij doet dat niets af aan de kwaliteit. Er zijn hopen films die geweldadig en aanstootgevend zijn, maar toch grote prijzen wonnen. Da’s trouwens ook iets wat ik in deze clip zie: een enorm hoog cinematografisch gehalte. In ieder geval stukken beter dan het gros van de R’nB-clips met als enige inhoud een hoop billen en tieten.

Bon, de clip zelf dan maar. Kijken op eigen risico.

Begrijp mij nu niet verkeerd, ik snap echt wel dat een dergelijk item als eerste hoofdpunt op het nieuws gegeven wordt. Ik heb er echter wel twijfels over of nu echt nodig was om mij gedurende 10 volle minuten te berichten over het feit dat er geen nieuws is.

En daar bleef het niet bij. Eens het Leterme-hoofdstuk achter de rug, volgden er 3 (ja, DRIE) onderwerpen over Valentijn. Het gevolg was dat men meer dan een kwartier gevorderd was in de berichtgeving en het enige wat ik tot dusver had opgestoken was dat bejaarden ook nog verliefd kunnen worden. Sterker nog: het buitenlands nieuws moest nog volgen. Maar ja, de laatste tijd heerst er als maar groeiende trent om het ver-van-ons-bed-nieuws zo sterk mogelijk te comprimeren en zo vlug mogelijk af te haspelen.

Wel een pluspunt: Na de laatste hervorming van het één-journaal hoef ik zelfs mijn ogen niet meer toe te doen om me in te beelden dat ik naar VTM aan het kijken ben. Een apart journaal op Canvas zou voor mij meer dan welkom zijn.
